The PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at UF Health Shands Hospital is an ASHP-accredited program emphasizing clinical pharmacy practice and its relationship to the total health system. The residency provides a framework for the practitioner to develop the skills necessary for providing pharmaceutical care in a variety of different health care settings.
Program
There are 13 pharmacy resident positions available to eligible candidates at UF Health Shands Hospital. These are divided among the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY2 specialty residencies that include critical care, infectious diseases, oncology, pediatrics, and solid organ transplant. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency offers six required rotations and provides ample time for elective rotations in a variety of settings.

Longitudinal Experiences
While a resident at UF Health Shands Hospital, each resident will:
- Staff one evening shift every 8 weekdays (3pm-7pm), every third weekend, and assigned holidays (1 major and 1 to 2 minor holidays)
- Conduct a Medication Use Evaluation
- Complete and present a P&T monograph
- Complete and publish an article for the Drugs and Therapy Bulletin
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings with the Director of Pharmacy and other preceptors
- Assist in precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students
- Present a platform presentation on a project at the Florida Residency Conference
- Give two formal, ACPE-accredited presentations on a therapeutic controversy to the Department
- Participate in Code Blue response services
- Complete a research project. Projects must receive prior approval and must be in publishable form upon completion of the residency
- Provide pharmacokinetics consultations — vancomycin and aminoglycosides
- Serve in a leadership role, examples include:

Stipend
The resident receives a $52,000 stipend paid by UF Health Shands Hospital. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Eligibility Requirements
- Academic: The applicant must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited school or college or pharmacy
- Professional License: All residents must be eligible for Florida licensure. Selected and matched residents must be licensed by August 1st.
- Interview: An on-site or virtual interview is required. Interviews are conducted on Fridays during the months of January and February.
- Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period. We do not sponsor international visas.
